Families to benefit from major investment in Xemxija Fire Station

Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri visiting upgraded Xemxija Fire Station

Another investment in the Civil Protection Department has resulted in the renovation of the Xemxija fire station, making it more modern and fully equipped, not only to provide a better service to families but also to offer an improved working environment for Civil Protection officials.

The fire station, operational since the 1990s, had never undergone major renovations. This project modernised the facility, expanding its infrastructure to accommodate new emergency vehicles and equipment. The renovation also includes dedicated decontamination areas for firefighters returning from incidents, ensuring their safety and well-being.

During a site visit, Minister for Home Affairs, Security, and Employment Byron Camilleri emphasised the government’s commitment to strengthening emergency response services. He highlighted that investments in infrastructure and equipment are essential to ensuring Malta remains prepared for any emergency.

The minister also noted that this upgrade is part of a broader initiative to modernise the Civil Protection Department. Recent improvements include new protective gear, such as lighter and safer fire suits and immersion suits, as well as the extension of the maritime fire station. Additionally, work is underway on new fire stations in Floriana and Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq. The department is also expanding its fleet with specialised vehicles designed for industrial, domestic, and hazardous material (HAZMAT) fires.

To further enhance response times, the government has developed a nationwide infrastructure allowing firefighters to access water supply points without returning to their stations. Additionally, a new CCTV system is being installed on fire engines, enabling real-time monitoring of incidents to improve decision-making and emergency coordination.

Regarding workforce conditions, Minister Byron Camilleri highlighted ongoing negotiations for a new sectoral agreement with workers’ unions. He emphasised key advancements, including the official recognition of the Civil Protection Department as a disciplined force, the introduction of a 25-year service tenure, and enhanced compensation through full payment for all hours worked, allowances, career progression incentives, and expanded training opportunities. These measures have significantly strengthened the department, increasing personnel from 130 employees twelve years ago to 375 today.

The minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to investing in both the workforce and infrastructure of the Civil Protection Department, ensuring a safer future for Maltese and Gozitan families.

Director General of the Civil Protection Department Peter Paul Coleiro welcomed the investment, stating that it enhances the department’s ability to deliver top-tier emergency services. He underscored the importance of providing firefighters with an optimal working environment, which not only improves their daily operations but also makes the profession more attractive to new recruits. This investment marks another step in the ongoing commitment to strengthening civil protection services across Malta, ensuring preparedness, efficiency, and safety for all.
