MeridianBet FA Trophy: Hibernians 2-0 win over Naxxar Lions

Hibernians booked their place in the semi-finals of the MeridianBet FA Trophy with a 2-0 win over Narxxar Lions.

On a cool and windy night at Ta’Qali, Villela opened the scoring when he cut inside from the left and curled the ball into the top corner, leaving Fenech stranded.

The Brazilian almost set up a second for Hibs when he whipped a cross into the box but Felicio could not get a touch.

Felicio raced into the Naxxar box but keeper Fenech forced him wide and although Felicio went down referee Malcolm Spiteri said no penalty.

Midway through the half Xeureb skied the ball over the bar from right in front of goal.

Naxxar were struggling to make an impact on the game although Yamaguchi on the left was keeping the Hibs defenders honest.

The second half began in the same manner with Hibs on the front foot. Bruno set Silas off on the left but the Nigerian’s cross failed to pick a team-mate in the box.

Naxxar’s best chance of drawing level came from a corner but Sanchez did well to block what looked to be a certain goal.

That seemed to spur Hibs into action and approaching the hour Felicio fired past Fenech to give Hibernians a two goal lead.

With time running out substitute Chukunyere got a sight of goal but Fenech did well to force him wide.

Yamaguchi tried his luck from the left only to see his effort sail high over the bar.

That was the last from Naxxar as two minutes of extra time ended with Hibernians into the semi-finals where they will meet Hamrun Spartans.
