Jonathan Attard attends and participates in the Council of EU Justice Ministers

The Minister for Justice and Construction Sector Reform Jonathan Attard attended and participated in the Council of Justice Ministers which met in Brussels where the discussion continued on various legislative tools and various themes including the fight against immunity in Russia’s aggression on Ukraine.

During the legislative discussions, a discussion took place on the directive dealing with the harmonisation of insolvency laws, where Minister Jonathan Attard, while acknowledging support for this legislative tool, clarified Malta’s position also with respect to the laws that our country has in force.

Another important topic was the strengthening of the applicability of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, where Member States stressed the coordination and importance of these rights. In the discussion on the Rule of Law as a pillar of democracy, the minister stressed that in Malta in recent years, unprecedented reforms have been carried out, including in the appointments of the judiciary, in order to ensure their independence and impartiality. These reforms are now being complemented by further reforms, including an important process of specialisation to continue to ensure more effective and efficient justice.

This Council meeting was also a continuation of an interesting discussion that Minister Jonathan Attard had in a bilateral meeting with the European Commissioner for Justice Michael McGrath, where during the meeting the Commissioner was updated on various reforms carried out and others that are being carried out in our country, including that related to inquiries and eventually also that related to the compilation process.
