“The catering industry is not merely a business sector; it is a pillar of Malta’s economy and a key driver of tourism.” Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism Ian Borg affirmed the crucial role of catering establishments as an integral part of Malta’s tourism product, in his closing remarks during a conference announcing the Association of Catering Establishments (ACE)’s Research & Economic Outlook, a study on local catering establishments during the second half of 2024.

The catering industry, which employs over 10,000 workers, is a significant contributor to Malta’s GDP, while simultaneously preserving and celebrating Malta’s rich culinary heritage. The ACE study shows that the majority of catering establishments are dedicated to Mediterranean and traditional local cuisine, reinforcing the Maltese Islands’ authentic gastronomic culture.

“The results announced today provide invaluable insights into the current state of our industry, equipping us with the knowledge to drive its continued development,” said Deputy Prime Minister Ian Borg. He stressed the need for authorities to constantly assess and update regulatory frameworks, while supporting businesses in addressing different challenges, including workforce development, waste management and operational efficiency.

He also noted that the Ministry for Tourism acknowledges that further enhancements to existing training programmes and certification processes, including the Skills Pass, need to be explored, to ensure a smooth transition for businesses and their employees.

Ian Borg highlighted the importance of innovation and sustainability for the industry’s future. “Digital transformation is no longer a choice, but a necessity. AI-driven pricing and menu optimisation can boost efficiency and profitability,” said the Deputy Prime Minister. He also highlighted the growing demand for eco-friendly practices, urging establishments to embrace sustainability.

“ACE has been instrumental in shaping this industry, and together with other stakeholders, we will continue driving progress. Let us move forward with determination and unity, ensuring Malta’s catering industry flourishes,” concluded the Deputy Prime Minister.
