Clint Camilleri, Minister for Gozo, announced a special weekend of top-flight football at the Gozo Stadium.
“Top-flight football is returning to Gozo, bringing back memories of the 1999/2000
season when Gozo FC competed at this level for the first and only time.
Though the team finished in 9th place and was relegated, it remains an
unforgettable season that many Gozitans still cherish.
Today, we are proud to officially announce that, for the first time in Maltese
football history, an entire Match Week from Malta’s top division will be played in
Gozo.
Many Gozitans avidly follow this competition, with some even crossing the
channel to watch the action live in the 360Sports Malta Premier.
We are confident that this announcement will be warmly welcomed, with
hundreds of Gozitans looking forward to experiencing top-tier football of the
highest standard at the Gozo Stadium during this historic weekend.
For Maltese supporters, this will be a truly unique experience.
We encourage you to come and cheer for your team while enjoying the beauty
and hospitality of Gozo.
Gozo is increasingly becoming a hub for major sporting events.
In recent years, we hosted the Super Cup between Floriana and Hibernians, and
around 18 months ago, the Gozo Stadium also welcomed matches from the
UEFA Under-19 European Championship final phase.
This apart the domestic Gozo football competitions organized by the GFA and
which continue to generate significant interest each season.
I would like to extend my gratitude to the GFA, entrusted in the Match Day
logistics and operations for these six fixtures.
A special thanks also goes to the Malta Premier League for believing and fully
endorsing this innovative concept, which will further elevate the profile of major
sports events hosted in Gozo.
Lastly, I would like to thank the 12 MPL club members, for their enthusiastic
participation in this historic initiative.
We are confident that this weekend will be a resounding success and a
memorable experience for all involved”.
