Over 30km of new cables installed

Energy Minister Miriam Dalli visiting new cable installation in Birzebbuga

Enemalta has laid more than 30 kilometres of new cables around the country as part of its ongoing investment to strengthen the electricity distribution system.

So far, as part of this project, new cables have been installed in Ħal Tarxien, Mellieħa, Gżira, and Birkirkara.

At present, in full consultation with the local council, new cables are being laid in Birżebbuġa; a seaside town that has seen significant growth and hosts a strong commercial presence. During a visit to the work site by the Minister for Energy, Miriam Dalli, and Enemalta’s Executive Chairman, Ryan Fava, it was explained that a total of 2.6 kilometres of new cables are being installed. Among other benefits, they will further strengthen the energy infrastructure and provide a more reliable and efficient service to the community. A new link was created between the distribution centre at the Freeport and the Birżebbuġa substations, thereby increasing flexibility and resilience in the network. In the event of a fault, the network will be able to respond more effectively.

Minister Miriam Dalli stated that this project forms part of Government’s vision to strengthen and modernise the energy infrastructure for the benefit of families and businesses across Malta and Gozo. “Supply security and efficiency are a priority. We are working towards providing a better and more modern system for the public while also planning for the future.”

Ing. Fava added that, apart from this investment, similar works are underway in several other localities as part of a project to install 60 kilometres of new cables in 21 localities around Malta and Gozo, with the aim of improving the capacity and reliability of electricity supply on a national scale.
