Malta advances three places on the Sustainable Development Goals Index for Europe

Energy Minister Miriam Dalli

Malta has surged three places to rank 24th out of 34 European countries in the Europe Sustainable Development Report 2025, released by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network and Dublin University Press. This marks an improvement from 27th place in the previous report.

“Our progress demonstrates Malta’s commitment to sustainable development. While we celebrate these achievements, we remain dedicated to overcoming remaining challenges through targeted policies and initiatives,” Minister for the Environment, Energy and Public Cleanliness Miriam Dalli stated, explaining that despite the advancements, Malta faces continued challenges similar to other European countries, and that government is addressing these gaps with sector-specific policies, investments, and initiatives across all ministries and entities.

Malta’s overall sustainability score has increased from 59.51% in 2000 to 69.33%. In the Leave-No-One-Behind (LNOB) score, Malta now stands 15th with a 76.12% score, up from 72.86% in 2000.

Looking ahead, Malta will present its second Voluntary National Review (VNR) on the Sustainable Development Goals at the United Nations High-Level Political Forum in New York this July. The VNR, developed by the Sustainable Development Directorate with input from local authorities, civil society, the private sector, academia, and citizens, aims to showcase progress and identify areas for further improvement to enhance policy effectiveness and institutional support.
