In a press conference on Thursday, Prime Minister Robert Abela and Justice Minister Jonathan Attard announced a reform in magisterial inquiries which is aimed at strengthening accountability in the investigative process.
Under the new law, which passed its First Reading in Parliament, persons must first report to the police, and if after six months they feel their report has not progressed, they may take their case directly to a judge. This reform ensures access to justice remains intact while preventing abuse of the legal system.
The judge will have the power to allow further police investigations, conclude inquiries, or order a magisterial inquiry. Additionally, those who file abusive requests for inquiries may be ordered to cover related costs.
