Birkirkara underline title challenge with win over Hamrun Spartans

Birkirkara showed why they are serious title contenders, even at this early stage of the season, recovering from a goal down to beat Hamrun Spartans 3-2 at the Tony Bezzina Stadium.

Hamrun were in front after less than a minute when Chris Ondong Mba was pushed by Agustin Sandona inside the area. Referee Philip Farrugia pointed to the and Luke Montebello fired Spartans in front.

Just over the half hour mark and B’Kara were back on level terms, Alex Satariano poking home from close range when Bonello could only parry a shot from Gnamien Yipke.

Satariano turned provider to set up Yipke to give B’Kara a 2-1 lead just before the break.

It was Satariano who seemed to have put the result out of sight with a powerful run from inside his own half to fire past Bonello.

Hamrun showed why they have been champions for the past two seasons with a late surge which saw Shaisen Attard pounce on a deflection before beating Volpe.

That was as close as Hamrun came to nicking a point. At the whistle, 3-2 to Birkirkara who now have a seven point lead over second placed Floriana who play Marsaxlokk on Monday.
