President Emmanuel Macron’s announcement that he was dissolving the French National Assembly and calling a snap election.
This surprise call by Macron comes in the wake of far-right parties in France and Italy performing well in the European Parliament elections.
The vote will take place in two rounds on 30 June and 7 July.
