€1.8 million in aid to villagers to make up for the increase in the price of feed

The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights Anton Refalo launched a financial scheme with an allocation of €1.8 million so that the Government makes up for the effects of the increase in the price of feed that has impacted to the Maltese and Gozitan villagers because of the conflict in Ukraine.

In a news conference, Minister Refalo explained how this financial aid is aimed at the animal sectors of milk production, beef, sheep, as well as the goat sector. “Since the international scene began to bring unexpected burdens on the villagers, this Government immediately started developing measures, initiatives and financial schemes to serve as a shoulder for them so that they do not carry the burdens alone. What we are announcing today is another testimony of this where the Maltese and Gozitan villagers are being relieved of the increase in the price of feed. This is a Government of the people, a Government that fulfills what it promises,” added Minister Refalo.

It was also explained that the Ministry carried out an analysis on the impact of rising feed prices on the animal sector. Between 2021 and 2022, the price of straw increased by 36% while the price of dry hay increased by 41%. In 2023, prices continued to increase, with a 9% increase in straw and a 2% increase for dry hay.

Accordingly, the Agricultural and Rural Payments Agency (ARPA) within the Ministry developed this scheme from national funds, in order to provide financial assistance to Maltese and Gozitan villagers.

The General Director of ARPA Louisa Formosa, explained how eligible farmers within the mentioned sectors will be able to benefit from direct payments based on the number of eligible animals they have. “This financial aid aims to reduce the financial burden on the villagers to ensure the continued prosperity of animal husbandry in Malta and Gozo.”
