Urban Gardens: A scheme has been launched for Local Councils to plant olive and orange trees in their localities

The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights Anton Refalo, together with the Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government Alison Zerafa Civelli launched the financial scheme ‘Urban Gardens’, aimed at Local Councils in order to funding is given for the purchase of olive and orange trees to be planted in public areas.

Minister Anton Refalo reiterated that they are launching this scheme so that the localities continue to beautify through more tree planting. “We are continuing to work so that our villages and towns continue to beautify through trees like these. This initiative even goes hand in hand with the work of the government so that our country has more green areas to be enjoyed by the public,” repeated Minister Refalo.

Local Councils are encouraged to apply for this scheme by identifying an area for tree planting and will be eligible for funding for a minimum of fifty trees.

Parliamentary Secretary Alison Zerafa Civelli welcomed this scheme which aims to green the localities and to lead to more decarbonisation and spaces where the public can recreate. She also noted how citrus and olive trees are trees that last for many years and therefore what will be done through this scheme will be enjoyed by future generations.

“I encourage the local councils to make use of these funds and be able to plant at least 50 trees in the respective localities, thus giving more green spaces to our families and also beautifying our localities . This measure goes hand in hand with the government’s election promise, that of better spaces and environment for our families,” concluded Parliamentary Secretary Zerafa Civelli.

The Local Councils can apply for this scheme until the 31st of May next.
