The scheme launched last year, Adopt a Pet Scheme, saw a number of people and families who adopted a domestic animal from the Department for the Appropriate Treatment of Animals (Animal Welfare). After a period of monitoring by members within the department to ensure that the adopted animal is in good condition after adoption, vouchers of €70 have now begun to be distributed to those who have adopted, to be used for veterinary care.
This was announced by the Parliamentary Secretary responsible for Animal Rights, Alicia Bugeja Said, during a news conference. She supported the need for more people to choose to adopt pets, thus providing shelter and love for these animals, many of which have been abandoned. “This voucher that we are giving today is a gesture of thanks for those people who chose to adopt these pets,” said the Parliamentary Secretary.
She added that the Government will continue to give its help and incentivize those who take care of animals. “We will continue to be the voice of animals and protect their rights. Anyone who supports the animals, we will be incentivizing him through various schemes like this and others that will be launched in the coming weeks and months,” said Parliamentary Secretary Bugeja Said.
The Parliamentary Secretary ended her speech by thanking all the workers of the Department for the Appropriate Treatment of Animals for the valuable work they do in the community for the protection of animals.
The Director of the Department for the Appropriate Treatment of Animals, Joseph John Vella, said that the department is continuing its work to protect animals, in particular those that are unfortunately abandoned. Therefore he encouraged more people to adopt these animals by going to Ghammieri or logging on to the site adoptapet.gov.mt .
