Malta addresses the general assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency

Malta was among the 144 countries participating this week in the general assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), held in Abu Dhabi. During this 14th session, the Minister for the Environment, Energy, and Regeneration of the Grand Harbour, Miriam Dalli, delivered a strong message in favour of the use of renewable energy and the importance that this transition adopts a strong policy in favour of the skills and training of workers.

During this assembly, more than 1,300 participants from around the world took part. Minister Miriam Dalli spoke about the importance of countries with different realities sharing best practices so that innovative solutions can be found.

“Malta is committed to advancing the use of renewable energy for a cleaner and greener future. This is our ambition, and as a country, we will continue working in this direction while contributing to the global dialogue on renewable energy,” explained Minister Dalli.

In her address, the Minister reiterated how, in recent years, Malta has adopted significant initiatives to be more sustainable and explained how the country has registered a significant reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the energy sector by almost 60%. She explained that this success was a result of the change the country made when it switched from heavy-fuel oil to cleaner energy sources. Minister Dalli also explained that Malta is looking at investing in clean energy both on land and at sea.

Minister Miriam Dalli recognized the importance of collaboration and the exchange of information and expertise in these fields. In fact, Malta was asked to join the SIDS Lighthouse Initiative so that states with similar circumstances could share not only knowledge but also support in areas such as energy security and affordability and accelerate the transition towards renewable energy.

The Minister concluded her intervention by stressing that Malta is being proactive in order to do its part in favour of climate action. “We look forward to establishing the first authority in Europe that will be focused on climate action. Malta will continue to strengthen its commitment to a more sustainable future”.
