“Young persons are making a positive difference in the work towards peace and security in the Mediterranean and we need to do more to offer the space for young persons to come forward as a positive force for building peaceful and resilient societies.”

This was stated by the Minister for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade Ian Borg while leading a debate on the role of young persons in addressing security challenges in the Mediterranean region, the second signature event organised by Malta during its Presidency of the United Nations Security Council, in New York.

Minister Borg said that the Mediterranean faces many challenges, primarily due to geopolitical tensions, terrorism, maritime security, climate change, and cybersecurity. Thus, it is crucial to have a holistic approach and strong cooperation among all countries in the region. “Civil society, especially young persons, have a central role to play in achieving positive changes in the work for peace.”

In his address, the minister explained that the Mediterranean region has one of the youngest populations, with one in every three persons under 25 years of age, and many times they are excluded from decision-making processes. “It is necessary for young persons to participate in many decisions taken to ensure more inclusivity and innovation in the ideas that lead us forward.”

Minister Borg also noted how in the Mediterranean region, there are still many young victims of stereotypes and discrimination. Crucial decisions need to be taken to prevent young persons from facing such challenges.

Throughout Wednesday, President of the Security Council Ian Borg also had a very positive meeting with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, about the collaboration between Malta and the United Nations, which continues to develop as a result of Malta’s Presidency this month. The minister stated that this joint effort can continue to grow over time, as part of Malta’s foreign policy objectives.

Minister Borg also met the Secretary-General of the Union for the Mediterranean, Nasser Kamel, who also participated in the conference on young persons in the Mediterranean.
