Discussions on the need to continue to attract more women to the construction sector

The Minister for Justice and Reform of the Construction Sector Jonathan Attard addressed a conference organized by the Chamber of Management of the Construction Sector which discussed the representation of women in the sector, as well as some of the common challenges facing this industry.

The aim of the conference was to take a look at the developments made when it comes to gender diversity and empowerment in the construction industry which is historically dominated by men.

“In Malta, where traditional gender roles often dictated career choices, women had to overcome societal expectations and prejudices to establish themselves in the male-dominated construction field”, said Minister Attard.

Minister Attard continued to speak about the government’s commitment to work on subjects through which it has left and will continue to leave an impact on women’s participation in public life.

“With various strong incentives we provided help so that more women could focus on their achievements and strive to build on the goals we had as a country and this because every individual, beyond gender, can focus and build a career “, Minister Attard continued.

Despite acknowledging that there are still challenges that need to be addressed in this sector, Minister Attard cited the latest annual statistics released by JobsPlus which showed how since 2013 the participation of women on the -jobs increased by more than 30 percent.

In his conclusions, Minister Attard reiterated that the construction industry, with gender equality, can improve productivity and lead the much needed positive change.

Among the various speakers who participated in the discussion were the Member of Parliament Dr. Katya De Giovanni, the Member of Parliament Rebekah Borg and the CEO of the Authority for Health and Safety at the Workplace Dr. Josianne Cutajar.
