President of Malta George Vella received European Parliament President Roberta Metsola at the Grand Master’s Palace in Valletta. President Vella underlined the important role of the European Parliament in participatory democracy, and the focus placed on the citizens through a number of initiatives. He expressed his hope that through the upcoming elections, EU citizens will get stronger access to, and influence on, EU institutions.
The role that the European Parliament plays in addressing regional developments was discussed, with a particular focus on enlargement and migration.
President Vella thanked Dr Metsola for her visit and for her cooperation during his Presidency term.
President Metsola thanked President Vella for his service to the people of Malta and Gozo, for their conversations and his guidance, and for great cooperation with the European Parliament.
She emphasised the importance of the upcoming European Parliament elections in June and reiterated her appeal to the people of Malta and Gozo to vote and make their voice heard when choosing the 6 Members of the European Parliament.
She also praised the recent renovations at the Grand Master’s Palace, done through EU funds. “This is yet another example how the EU brings about a positive change in our societies, by preserving culture and promoting our heritage,” President Metsola said.
