The community of Swieqi will be enjoying a new sports hall through an investment from the Government which will continue to strengthen the operation of various sports associations in Swieqi.
The Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government Alison Zerafa Civelli said that this project is among a chain of other projects carried out in the communities by the local councils, through schemes that the Government finances from time to time. She went on to explain the importance of local councils recognizing the needs of their community and utilizing the funds given to them in order to address these needs.
“This project complements several other sports infrastructure projects being carried out by the Government. This building which will be used by the sports associations in the community, shows us how much the local councils are really an extension of the work of the Government in the heart of the localities,” concluded the Parliamentary Secretary Zerafa Civelli.
This project consisted of an extension of a building to develop a multipurpose hall to be used for sporting purposes. The local council will be giving the opportunity to various sports organizations in Swieqi to make use of this hall, which will be instrumental so that these organizations are in a better position to offer more sports opportunities to the residents in -locality.
Mayor of Swieqi Noel Muscat thanked the Local Government Division for the funds for this project. He explained that the sports associations in the locality did not have a place from which they could operate or where they could meet their members. Therefore, through this project, the local council is helping these organizations by offering them a suitable place to continue to strengthen their valuable work in the community.
The Director General of the Local Government Division Emil Vassallo said that the financial schemes offer an opportunity to the local councils to look at the needs of the community and address them. “This project of the local council of Swieqi is an example of how, through the funds obtained from this scheme, they have led to sports organizations and the residents of Swieqi enjoying this investment today and in the future, ” explained Mr. Vassallo.
Several representatives of the sports associations of Swieqi were present for this conference.
