A new Day Center for the elderly in Floriana

The Furiani elderly who still live in the community will begin to enjoy the service of a new Day Center. This was inaugurated by the Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government Alison Zerafa Civelli and by the Parliamentary Secretary for Active Aging Malcolm Paul Agius Galea together with the Local Mayor Vincent Borg.

This project was carried out with an investment partially financed by European funds, where the top floor of the local council building that was not in use was turned into a Day Center for the elderly living in -community.

This project included works to make the building more accessible to the elderly, including the installation of a lift and accessible toilets. The project also included the installation of a new kitchenette and recreation room so that the elderly would have an adequate place to socialize. In this room there will be a carer present to assist the elderly. It is also planned to start giving basic courses for those interested seniors.

The Parliamentary Secretary Alison Zerafa Civelli said that the Government fully believes in the importance of inclusion and accessibility for a fairer society, and that these two factors will translate well in the Furian community through this project. She continued to stress that the Government will continue to support the local councils because it believes that the local councils are the extension of the Government’s work in the center of the Gozitan and Maltese localities.

“I congratulate the local council of Floriana which recognized the needs of the elderly community and worked in favor of this project in order to improve the quality of life of the residents,” concluded the Parliamentary Secretary Zerafa Civelli.

Parliamentary Secretary Malcolm Paul Agius Galea spoke on  the importance of these day centers where the elderly have the chance to get together, socialize and fight loneliness. He explained how together with programs of physical activities and mental stability designed for individuals, this translates into a better quality of life and peace of mind for family members.

Parliamentary Secretary Agius Galea concluded by saying how these day centers continue to help and give dignity to the elderly as well as continue to form part of the community.

The Mayor of the Local Council of Floriana Vincent Borg explained that the opening days will be from Monday to Friday, during the middle of the morning.

Present during this inauguration were also several members from the Local Council of Floriana and the Assistant Director within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Norway, Torill Johansen.
