The National Audit Office (NAO) of Malta, in collaboration with the European Court of Auditors (ECA), hosted their Annual Joint Seminar in Floriana. The focus of this year’s seminar was the crucial theme of “Digitilisation and AI in Public Audit”. Participants included NAO staff, MPs from the Public Accounts Parliamentary Committee, former Maltese Members of the European Court of Auditors, the Principal Permanent Secretary and DG, Internal Audit and Investigations Department.
The seminar aimed to serve as a platform for insightful discussions and the exchange of expertise regarding the integration of digital technologies and artificial intelligence in the realm of public audit. Speakers from both the NAO and the ECA shared their perspectives, experiences, and future strategies on this transformative subject.
The program featured an introductory address by Mr Charles Deguara, Auditor General, the ECA’s viewpoint on the matter presented by Dr George Marius Hyzler, ECA Member, the ECA’s experiences and future direction discussed by Mr Emanuele Fossati, ECA Expert, general implications of AI explored by Dr Michel Camilleri, a former academic on AI, and the NAO’s perspective presented by Simon Camilleri, NAO Manager of IT Audits and Operations. The key takeaways from the seminar were outlined by Mr Noel Camilleri, Deputy Auditor General. Closing reflections on the theme were then shared by Mr Charles Deguara and Dr George Marius Hyzler.
This joint NAO-ECA Seminar offered valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities arising from the increasing digitilisation and integration of AI in public audit practices. The seminar also provided an opportunity for the NAO and ECA to emphasise the excellent cooperation and working relationship between these two audit institutions.
