Malta is a social protection catalyst among the countries of the European Union

“With the measures announced in Budget 2024, the Maltese Government is ensuring stability and peace of mind for Maltese and Gozitan families.” This was the main message of the Parliamentary Secretary for Social Dialogue Andy Ellul when he was addressing a Ministerial conference on minimum income and social inclusiveness in Europe, organized by the Presidency of the Council of the Belgian European Union in Brussels .

In his address, Parliamentary Secretary Ellul said how in the last months our country continued to invest in measures to strengthen the income of families and pensioners. He mentioned how a study by the Central Bank of Malta confirmed that the payment of the additional mechanism against the cost of living will have a positive effect on the purchasing power of families. This while the same mechanism will be helping those with low incomes and pensioners against inflation.

The Parliamentary Secretary also spoke about how the Maltese Government reached an agreement with all social partners so that on 1 January 2024 the increase in the national minimum wage came into effect. This together with the subsidies on energy bills, grains and cereals together with the stability in the prices of essential food products.

“This is the progressive and holistic action of the Maltese Government to ensure that we continue to grow a resilient economy that is supportive for both families and businesses,” concluded Parliamentary Secretary Andy Ellul.
