Last year, after the signing of the bilateral agreement between Malta and the United Kingdom, both governments held important meetings to start the implementation of a number of measures. 2024 should be another important year to implement tangible actions.
This was stated during a bilateral meeting held by the Minister for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade of Malta, Ian Borg, together with the Minister for Europe of the United Kingdom, Leo Docherty.
Both countries recognised the special bilateral relationship that the two countries have and reiterated how, through this agreement, this relationship can be further strengthened.
The discussion evolved on the multilateral aspect, particularly in relation to Malta’s Chairpersonship of the OSCE and even the United Nations Security Council, as both countries will have the Presidency during this year. The priorities of both countries were discussed.
The subject of the Maltese Chairpersonship of the OSCE was one that was discussed in detail during this meeting. Malta expressed its gratitude to the United Kingdom for their support at this crucial moment in our country’s history. Minister Borg claimed that Malta is assuming this role with great responsibility whilst recognising the critical moment that the world is going through.
Minister Docherty said that the United Kingdom appreciates the effort and commitment that Malta is making at the level of the United Nations Security Council and even the OSCE in this challenging time. He claimed that he looks forward to more effective cooperation for the benefit of the two peoples on a bilateral basis.
The United Kingdom’s relations with the European Union, the conflict in Gaza and other conflicts, the Commonwealth and even immigration were also discussed.
