Water Services Corporation is embarking on a 10-year plan to invest €310 million to revolutionise the management and sustainability of Malta’s water and wastewater sector.
Minister for the Environment, Energy and the Regeneration of the Grand Harbour Miriam Dalli and Water Services Corporation CEO Karl Cilia launched the 2023-2033 National Investment Plan for Water and Wastewater Sector on Tuesday.
The comprehensive plan addresses critical challenges such as water scarcity, climate change, and the need for efficient wastewater management. It lays down a strategic framework for investments in water production, distribution, and wastewater treatment, aiming to meet the growing demands of the population and economy.
Minister Miriam Dalli noted that 2023 has been an all-round record-breaking year for the Water Services Corporation. “We registered unparalleled achievements in water production, new water produced, water billed, leakage reduction, and record investment, culminating in the best financial year for this Corporation.”
“The achievements of 2023 highlight our commitment to excellence and efficiency in water management. Aligned with EU regulations, the High-Level National Investment Plan reinforces our water infrastructure, paving the way for a greener, more efficient, and sustainable water management system. This is a commitment to our nation’s health, environment, and future generations,” stated Minister Dalli.
Karl Cilia explained that the Corporation stands at a pivotal moment in the management of water resources. “This plan is testament to our proactive approach and dedication to ensuring the highest standards of water quality and service. Our focus on technology and innovation will drive us towards achieving unprecedented levels of efficiency and sustainability.”
The 10-year plan ensures Malta’s alignment with European standards in water management and promotes the circular economy concept by encouraging resource recovery and the reuse of reclaimed water. Supported by the Ministry, the Corporation secured €126 million in EU funds to finance part of this plan.
2023 has been a landmark year for the Water Services Corporation (WSC), marked by a series of record-breaking achievements that underscore its pivotal role in the successful management and sustainability of Malta’s water resources:
- Record reduction in Non-Revenue Water (water that has been produced and is lost before reaching the customer) year on year, with a reduction of another 3.5% over the previous record year. Network efficiency now registering at 72.7%, up from 52% in 2011.
- Record leakage levels, with an overall Infrastructure Leakage Index of just 1.8 or 9.5% of water production, compared to 13% in 2013.
- Record number of water misuse cases solved and paid-up, exceeding 100 instances.
- Record water production of 36.7 million cubic meters, the highest in the last 20 years, to meet the growing demands of a booming economy and tourism sector.
- Record 1.6 million cubic meters of New Water supplied to the farming community.
- Record low chlorine levels in water, reduced by 30% throughout 2023.
- 9.1 million units of electricity generated from the Corporation’s existing 4 photovoltaic energy installations and from its biogas plants, powering 1,300 households.
