Central Japan has been hit by up to 30 earthquakes with the most powerful measuring 7.6 magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale.
A tsunami warning was issued following the tremors, urging residents to evacuate and prepare for possible aftershocks.
More than 36,000 homes in the area have been left without power.
The first earthquake struck just after 7am local time.
