Activism amongst young deserves support: PM Robert Abela

We strengthen and support the activism coming even from among the youngest citizens of our country

The Prime Minister Robert Abela stressed that the activism coming from among the youngest citizens of our country deserves every support. “The Government continues to listen to the voices of children and young people who are not only the Maltese of tomorrow but also citizens of today”, claimed the Prime Minister during the launch of the RIGHTS project managed from the Maltese Foundation for the Good of Society. This project took its form after financing from European funds and working in cooperation with the Ministries for Local Government, for Education and the Association of Local Councils.

“I confess that every experience I have with children and young people is one that I learn a lot from because their lens is also necessary to continue making decisions for the present and the future,” said Dr. Abela. The Prime Minister explained that in the coming weeks the Youth Advisory Forum will begin to meet officially. This was after the interviews were carried out by a special selection board in which there was also the representation of the National Youth Council.

“What you are doing, we will continue it with another step. Today I look forward to starting the experience with the Youth Advisory Forum,” stressed the Prime Minister and he notes how the RIGHTS project of the Foundation led by President Emeritus Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca will train children and young people in leadership skills and set up Local and Regional Children’s Councils.

The Prime Minister said that our country has made major changes in strengthening the voice of young people including with Vote-16 and the introduction of a legal amendment that will lead to respecting the vote in the elections of the Local Councils in totality his, in case the community appoints a young person of 16 or 17 years to occupy the position of Mayor or Vice-Mayor. “We are convinced that we continue to strengthen the voice of children and young people who have aspirations for the future and our job is to create opportunities for their dreams to turn into reality”, said Prime Minister Robert Abela.

In this context the Prime Minister said that this is why the Government is fulfilling a key promise, that of the guarantee for children because to strengthen the voice of children you must invest in them in every aspect. Here he mentioned the social and educational aspect. The Prime Minister thanked the Foundation and the Ministries among others involved in a project that continues to strengthen activism in the Maltese and Gozitan communities. “A healthy Malta means that we have communities that serve their needs regarding different themes including the environment, the technological upheavals that our country is experiencing and the importance of the quality of life in everything we do,” he said. Before addressing the launch of the project, Prime Minister Robert Abela had a discussion with children and young people on various themes and noted their invaluable ideas.
