Workplace health and safety enforcement and training must be complemented by culture change

The Workplace Health and Safety Authority (OHSA) organized a seminar on the responsibilities and duties related to the health and safety of workers within the public sector. This was done as part of the information campaign that this Authority is doing in order to continue increasing the knowledge about a healthy and safe work environment for every worker.

While he was addressing this seminar, the Minister for Public Works and Planning Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi stressed the importance of more knowledge on this subject.

“In order to have more health and safety at every workplace, we must continue to strengthen enforcement but this must be complemented with more knowledge and training. A complete change in culture is needed so that one understands that the regulations are there to safeguard the worker’s health and not to avoid fines,” said Minister Zrinzo Azzopardi.

The minister also spoke about the continuous work that is going on even at Government level, in order to make the necessary updates, even in the procurement phase, so that whoever applies for Government tenders, is evaluated not only by the financial aspect, but also on the health and safety measures he will be taking during the execution of the project.

In her address, the CEO of the Authority Josianne Cutajar emphasized the importance of these seminars where representatives of entities within the public sector have the opportunity to participate in a broad discussion and present their thoughts theirs.

“We are organizing these seminars to increase more knowledge and we started right from the public service administration to continue disseminating prevention information in order to reduce dangers and risks, particularly in construction sites,” she said. Josianne Cutajar.

The Head of Public Service Tony Sultana also attended this seminar.
