Minister for Home Affairs, Security, Reform and Equality Byron Camilleri attended the meeting of the European Defence Ministers at the Foreign Affairs Council held in Brussels. During the Council, Minister Camilleri together with his counterparts discussed the assistance to Ukraine to defend its national territory and the civilian population against Russia’s aggression. Minister Camilleri, highlighted that Malta will continue to offer its support in areas where Malta can contribute in line with Malta’s Constitutional obligations. Minister Camilleri also referred to Malta’s efforts to support President Zelensky’s Peace Formula, with the successful hosting in Malta of the third meeting of National Security Advisors.
Minister Camilleri stressed the need to ensure that the EU’s support to Ukraine should be based on long-term planning as well as including all the EU’s priorities and challenges which are of equal importance to Member States. Minister Camilleri noted that the EU is facing security challenges from various directions, and underlined the importance that these are given the attention that they merit.
Minister Camilleri also participated in the discussion on current developments in the Middle East, the Western Balkans and Africa, expressing concerns on the deteriorating political and security situation in the Sahel and the Middle East.
The Minister also stressed that Hamas’ terrorist attack on Israel is condemnable. However, no terrorist attack or act of self defence should lead to the killing of hundreds of children and innocent civilians. Minister Camilleri stressed that we should insist on dialogue that leads to a ceasefire and ultimately to a two-state solution.
Defence Ministers also discussed the development of the Rapid Deployment Capacity which is a joint capability intended to provide EU Member States the capacity to assist European citizens during moments of emergency. Minister Camilleri also noted that the Armed Forces of Malta were able to contribute a medical team in the EU’s joint exercise in preparation of the EU RDC. The Ministers also discussed the priorities of the EU Member States on the development of Defence capabilities, primarily through joint procurement through the European Defence Agency.
