With the very real prospect of a ground assault by Israeli forces into Gaza, airlines and governments are racing to get their citizens out of the region.
Air Malta and British Airways, as well as many other airlines, have suspended flights to and from Israel. The country’s own national carrier, El Al, has announced extra flights to and from Athens, Rome, Madrid, Bucharest, New York, Paris, Larnaca and Istanbul in effort to get people out of the region.
With reports that the combined death toll reported by both sides reached more than 2,000 people, following the weekend attacks by a militant faction of Palestinian political group Hamas and retaliatory strikes by Israeli forces and fuel, water and electricity supplies to Gaza cut off by Israel, there are calls for a humanitarian safe passage out of Gaza.
