Renovation project at the International Institute of Maritime Law at the University of Malta

The Minister for Public Works and Planning Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi and the Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization, IMO, Kitack Lim inaugurated a new hall and new accommodation facilities for students attending the International Institute of -Maritime Law, IMLI, on the campus of the University of Malta, in Msida.

For the inauguration present among others, the Director of the International Institute of Maritime Law, Professor Martínez Gutiérrez as well as several students who attended this occasion. Minister Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi said that the Government through the Ministry for Public Works and Planning financed this project with an investment of almost €500,000.

He stressed that through this investment the students will have a nicer and more comfortable environment in which to do their lessons as they will have more modern and high quality facilities, systems and means. “The Government recognizes the importance of the maritime industry for the Maltese economy and therefore through initiatives like these we are continuing to invest in the rich maritime heritage of our country,” concluded the minister.

Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization, Kitack Lim thanked the Government of Malta and the Government of the Republic of Korea for the support he received from them. He said that through the work that was financed by the Maltese Government and that of the Republic of Korea, the students will not only have a more comfortable environment in which to learn but this will help to spur forward cultural exchange and collaboration among individuals from various nations.

The Institute of International Maritime Law, IMLI, was established in 1988 under the auspices of the International Maritime Organization and is a recognized center in the world, among others for the training of specialists in international maritime law.
