Chief European Prosecutor Laura Kovesi acknowledges the cooperation from the Maltese Government

The Minister for Justice Jonathan Attard and the Minister for the Interior, Security, Reforms and Equality Byron Camilleri had a formal meeting with the Chief European Prosecutor Laura Kovesi in the Berga d’Aragona.

During the meeting the cooperation that has strengthened over the last year between the EPPO Office and the Maltese institutions was discussed. In fact, Malta is today carrying out the highest number of investigations on transnational crimes per head compared to the rest of the member countries.

This strengthening is the result of a number of procedures that regulated the modus operandi of sharing information and coordination between all stakeholders. The Minister for Justice Jonathan Attard said that a clear proof of the Government’s commitment in this area is the fact that upon the return of the opening of the Parliament a draft law will be presented which will ensure that the directive to regulate this process will be more clear and concrete in the legislative framework of our country. Through these legislative amendments more coordination and cooperation will be ensured between the EPPO Office and the entities and institutions of Malta including the Courts, the Attorney General’s Office, the Police and others.

The Minister for the Interior, Security, Reforms and Equality Byron Camilleri explained how the Government is offering all the necessary assistance, including with the human resource where among others there are two Police specifically assigned to the EPPO Office.

The Chief European Prosecutor Laura Kovesi recognized the progress made in this important area that safeguards the investment of trans-European public funds. She reiterated how in the last year the cooperation between the EPPO Office and the Maltese institutions had been strengthened, and this bodes well for the time to come. Present for this meeting was also the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Justice
