The future of our country depends on how strong an infrastructure we will have that, while reaping the opportunities, also meets the challenges of the digital world.
This was the message by the Minister for the Economy, European Funds and Lands, Silvio Schembri when he visited the works being carried out on the true fiber network by GO, in Luqa, with an investment of € 100 million. While 75% of our country is already covered by this infrastructure, with this investment we will see the whole country incorporated into this network by the end of next year.
“That we already had a strong digital base was crucial, particularly during the pandemic when digital contact with relatives and friends was more essential, so it was important that companies like GO could continue to provide a service and continue to operate in extraordinary circumstances. Which in the end led to a faster recovery from the pandemic so they could continue to invest in our country. This investment also shows the dedication that GO has towards the technological advancement of our country. Projects of this type are not done in isolation, but are the result of collaboration between various Government entities, including the Maltese Communications Authority, MCA and the private sector. And what GO is doing will lead us to a more solid infrastructure that will meet the connectivity needs not only of today, but also of the future. Together we will continue to build a Malta that is technologically progressive, economically sound and inclusive for everyone,” said Minister Silvio Schembri.
The CEO of GO Nikhil Patil said that the True Fiber Network project started in 2016 and is running at a fast pace, as so far 75% of homes and 80% of businesses have this technology. “Our resilience on the internet will continue to increase and although today we cannot predict the future, we can build a network that will be able to meet the digital ambitions of the future.”
