The Eastern Region will be the Cultural Region for the year 2024

This Regional Council has been allocated a quarter of a million euros, so that together with the local councils within it, they can organize various cultural activities during the coming year.

These details were announced by the Minister for National Heritage, Arts and Local Government Owen Bonnici and the Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government Alison Zerafa Civelli.

Minister Owen Bonnici claimed that this is an investment not only in more cultural activities in the various streets and villages, but also an investment in the artists and creatives themselves who are so talented. “The Eastern Region will be the second Region to be entrusted with a cultural calendar after this year the Southern Region decided to put up a cultural calendar. In total, 14 cultural activities have been staged so far and it is believed that 9 more cultural activities will be staged in the Southern Region. Through this initiative we will leave an important legacy for further strengthening of the cultural fabric,” repeated Minister Bonnici.

Parliamentary Secretary Alison Zerafa Civelli spoke about the success of this scheme in the localities within the Southern Region and explained that the activities and cultural initiatives that were organized helped in the appreciation towards the Maltese culture and its preservation for the generations after us. “The Cultural Regions scheme continues to strengthen the promotion of cultural heritage in the various localities of the country. Therefore, we look forward to the cultural calendar that the Eastern Region will put on during the coming year,” concluded Parliamentary Secretary Alison Zerafa Civelli.

Permanent Secretary Joyce Dimech explained how, through the Cultural Regions Scheme, substantial parts of the cultural strategies of the six Regions, which were launched last December, are being implemented. She thanked all those involved and who are collaborating fully in this project. The President of the Eastern Regional Council Anthony Chircop reiterated that the Cultural Region title will serve as a platform to show the unique identity of the Eastern Region.

“Committed to implement lasting initiatives, with the active involvement of the community. In the cultural program we will honor our historical roots and traditions, while celebrating the diverse heritage that forms our foundation. We will also celebrate diversity and we will emphasize on the unity between generations and cultures,” explained Mr. Chircop.

The localities that fall within the Eastern Region and that will be part of the Cultural Region include Birkirkara, Pembroke, Swieqi, l’Pietà, Għargħur, Ħal Lija, l’Msida, Ta’ Xbiex, San Điljan, tas -Sliema, Iklin and the Island.
