While in the United States for a number of meetings, Minister for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade Ian Borg had several meetings at the United Nations Headquarters.
Minister Borg, currently accompanied by the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee for Foreign and European Affairs Glenn Bedingfield and the Opposition Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs Beppe Fenech Adami, began with a meeting with the current President of the United Nations General Assembly, Csaba Kőrösi. During this meeting, they specifically discussed Malta’s unique presidency experience in February and the work being done by the General Assembly to sustain its support.
In the second meeting, Minister Borg and the Maltese delegation met with Dennis Francis, the 78th President of the United Nations General Assembly, meaning the forthcoming President. Aside from discussing the upcoming themes and work for the September General Assembly, where heads of state from various countries will attend, they also addressed the collaboration between the Presidency of Dennis Francis and Malta’s Presidency of the United Nations Security Council in April 2024. The aim is to ensure both Presidencies complement each other in their efforts.
The Maltese delegation also had a meeting with the Secretariat of the 1267 Committee of the United Nations. The 1267 Committee is responsible for sanctions on Al-Qaida and the Taliban. During this meeting, the delegation gained a deeper understanding of the important role of this committee and the work being carried out. It is to be noted that Malta’s Permanent Representative Vanessa Frazier is currently chairing this committee.
