In the background of the United Nations ‘Blue Hearts Campaign’ and as part of the Government’s ongoing work against human trafficking, a discussion was organized that focused on reaching all victims and leaving no one behind.
Parliamentary Secretary for Reforms and Equality Rebecca Buttigieg stated how the fight against human trafficking requires the collaboration of all Ministries, governmental entities, and social partners so that there is no room for exploitation of vulnerable persons by those who exercise power or control over others. She went on to say how this collaboration gives the State the necessary tools to identify instances of human trafficking, bring the perpetrators to justice and give support to the victims as they deserve.
Minister for Social Policy and Children’s Rights Michael Falzon spoke about the work being done by the Aġenzija Appoġġ, where it helps these victims through temporary residence, and psychological support, among others. “We want to send a message of solidarity, support and comfort to those who are going through a difficult time. Everyone has the right to a secure livelihood and better life opportunities. Nothing and no one has the right to impose or control the life of any person, and therefore we have the obligation to work and identify any situation of abuse that may be going on”, stated Minister Falzon.
The Director of Human Rights Michael Camilleri explained how the Directorate is currently engaged in preparing for a new national action plan as soon as the current one comes to an end this year. Today’s discussion follows a number of other initiatives that show the Government’s commitment in this regard. Among these, a Monitoring Committee against human trafficking was set up as well as an Interministerial Committee represented by a member from all the Ministries. This together with several awareness campaigns throughout the year in order to deliver the very important message.
