The National Archives of Malta and the Foundation for Notarial Archives have signed an agreement on the management of the Notarial Records Archive.
While he was presiding over the signing of the agreement, the Minister for National Heritage, Arts and Local Government Owen Bonnici reiterated that the two entities share the same goal – that of protecting our country’s archives and making them accessible.
“I am happy to see that the National Archives of Malta is entering into a partnership with the Foundation for Notarial Archives to preserve the memory of our country,” stated Minister Bonnici.
Through this agreement the Notarial Archives Foundation will be managing the Notarial Records Archive, while this will remain an integral part of the National Archives of Malta. This archive will be based in a building that has just been renovated with the help of European Funds.
“This archive is a link in the chain of the National Archives in order to continue carrying out their mission as the guardians of collective memory. That was why two years ago the Government passed a law to make this archive an integral part of the National Archives,” concluded Minister Bonnici.
Dr Joan Abela, President of the Foundation for Notarial Archives, explained the work that the foundation has carried out over the last few years so that this archive is looked after, known and appreciated and for it to take on a new life. “Now we look forward to take the next step in our work together with the National Archives,” said Dr Abela.
The National Archivist Dr. Charles Farrugia thanked the Notarial Archives Foundation for the important work it has carried out. He also thanked the Government Notary Dr. Keith German who led the rehabilitation project of the building of this archive. “I am sure that the partnership between the Foundation and the National Archives will lead to this archive being looked after, known and valued as it deserves,” repeated Dr Farrugia.
