Improvement of public services in the heart of localities

Five Local Councils within the Southern Region were funded €350,000 between them to introduce in their respective localities public latrines with automatic cleaning systems, using the latest available technology.
This is after last year the Local Government Division issued an expression of interest for the Regional Councils to benefit from a scheme for the development and improvement of automatic public latrines in localities around Malta and Gozo, with an investment of ‘ more than two million euros.
The five Local Councils that benefited from these funds are Santa Lucija, Marsaxlokk, Qormi, Gudja and Santa Venera. The Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government Alison Zerafa Civelli explained that this funding scheme for more automatic public latrines in the heart of localities is another electoral measure carried out.
“This Government is committed to continuing to provide the Local Councils with all the necessary tools so that they are in a position to meet the needs of their respective localities and residents, while we continue to raise the quality of life in ‘our country,’ stressed Parliamentary Secretary Zerafa Civelli.
The Parliamentary Secretary also said that this financial scheme is just one of many other financial schemes that the Government is giving to Local Councils in order to improve and deliver public services in the heart of the localities and closer to the citizens.
Director for Strategy and Policy Implementation within the Local Government Division, Marisa Pisani, said that this funding will contribute to improving public services for residents in localities around Malta and Gozo.
Public latrines have an important function in localities both for residents and visitors, as well as for the businesses located in them. Therefore, through this scheme, these localities will improve the well-being of their respective residents.
The President of the Southern Regional Council, Jesmond Aquilina, said that through this funding these five Local Councils will be doing maintenance work and new automatic latrines with the aim of offering a better service to those makes use of these facilities.
Present for the granting of funding were the Mayors and the respective Executive Secretaries of the five Local Councils that benefited from the funds.
