While he was addressing a conference on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Microsoft company in Malta, the Minister for the Economy, European Funds and Lands Silvio Schembri said that the success of this company in our country goes hand in hand in hand with the successes that our country is achieving in the field of innovative technology.
Minister Schembri mentioned how Malta has made giant strides in the technological field, so much so that in the Digital Futures Index made by Microsoft across Europe, he found that Malta was in the same place with countries like Finland, Sweden, Denmark and the Netherlands in terms of connectivity and investment in research and development. Our country obtained the highest result, 96%, on eGovernment services, according to a study commissioned by the European Commission.
Here, Malta surpassed countries much larger than it, such as Estonia, the Netherlands, Finland, Denmark, Norway, Spain and Portugal, among others. “When we talk about technology, we cannot fail to mention Artificial Intelligence, which is a reality that is with us more than we think. Here too from the beginning we understood the challenges and opportunities of this field and in 2019 we launched our strategy for AI. At that time we knew that one of the important aspects is safety and ethics, and what we said then is still valid today,” said Minister Schembri.
“To continue to succeed in this field we must continue to invest in research, innovation and education. We must continue to attract and cooperate with the industry to continue creating more opportunities in these sectors which are the future,” concluded Minister Schembri.
