Mayors, Councilors and Executive Secretaries discuss the National Strategic Vision of Local Government

As this year local councils are celebrating 30 years since their establishment in Malta and Gozo, the National Association of Executive Secretaries of Local and Regional Councils (ANSEK) organized an annual conference in collaboration with the Secretariat Parliamentarian for Local Government.

The conference was open to the Executive Secretaries of the local and regional councils and to other partners of the local councils. The topic of discussion was the National Strategic Vision of Local Government which was launched this month.

In her address during the conference, the Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government Alison Zerafa Civelli stressed the importance of the continuous dialogue between the partners of the Local Government, as now the sector will start the process of ‘ implementation of the National Strategic Vision of Local Government. “The next seven years will be demanding for the leaders of the Local Government, but I am convinced that they will be beneficial in order to overcome the challenges that we find in the localities, while we continue to improve the quality of life of the Maltese and Gozitan residents,” said Parliamentary Secretary Zerafa Civelli.

This conference also included five workshops, with five discussion themes, which represented the five main pillars on which the Strategic Vision was drawn up. The workshops were led by mediators who specialize in the subject of each theme.

President of ANSEK Paul Gatt spoke about the Strategic Vision of the Local Government and mentioned how a wide consultation was done with all partners including ANSEK. “In order for this Strategic Vision to be successful, it requires the participation of everyone, particularly the Executive Secretaries who manage the decisions and therefore they should be the ones who spur the change in the direction of this national vision,” he concluded.

Also present were the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry for National Heritage, Arts and Local Government Joyce Dimech, the Director General of Local Government Natalino Attard, and the President of the Association of Local Councils Mario Fava.
