Works on Difiża Ċivili road in Mosta nearing completion, encouraging alternative modes of transport

Through a €1.7 million investment, Infrastructure Malta (IM) is concluding road works in Difiża Ċivili road in Mosta. This road, which connects Mosta with Naxxar, has been reconstructed for the first time with infrastructure that encourages alternative modes of transport, such as cycling and walking.

This was announced by Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects Aaron Farrugia and IM CEO Ivan Falzon during an on-site visit.

The project created a continuous, safe pedestrian footpath along the whole road that was absent in the previous set up. Furthermore, the project created a segregated cycle lane to encourage a modal shift in transportation.  This project builds upon the agency’s vision and plans announced earlier this month, where a €35 million activity mobility plan was presented.

Additionally, the project incorporated safe pedestrian crossings into the new design, and bus stops were placed at strategic locations to enhance the safety of those who make use of them. A new street lighting system was also introduced. New services were also installed, including 1 kilometre of Enemalta and telephone cables, and 300 metres of potable water works.

Minister Aaron Farrugia emphasised the importance of projects that prioritise people and provide secure infrastructure, irrespective of the mode of transport being utilised. He explained how in recent months, IM has been paying particular attention to projects that encourage people to make use of alternative modes of transport.

“The principle of infrastructure for the people is much more than just a slogan. It is a way of carrying out and implementing a variety of projects. This investment is another example of a series of projects demonstrating how through careful planning, we can implement projects which truly benefit everybody,” concluded Minister Farrugia.

This visit was also attended by members of the Mosta Local Council.
