Another investment that will help Maltese and Gozitan farmers

During a visit to the Directorate for Health and Plant Protection, the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights Anton Refalo announced that with an investment of around €60,000 infrastructural improvements were made in the greenhouses and in the shadehouse within the directorate, as well as an electric vehicle was bought which will lead to less air pollution.

Minister Refalo also announced an initiative being carried out by this directorate where, through the laboratory and other facilities, hundreds of blackberry and mulberry trees were grown in order to compensate the losses that the sector suffered after that in recent years a new insect appeared in our country where it destroyed a large amount of blackberry and mulberry trees.

“The infrastructural improvement was necessary to continue growing these native trees that offer the Maltese and Gozitan people a healthy and clean environment,” repeated Minister Refalo.

He concluded by saying that this investment is a clear demonstration that the government is committed to continue investing in this sector and will lead to the directorate continuing to be of assistance to the agricultural sector.

Director of the Directorate for Plant Health and Protection Dennis Sciberras stressed the importance of the directorate’s work as the production of trees from Maltese varieties is important for resilience that our country has to build so that it can even accommodate climate change.
