The Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri together with the Parliamentary Secretary for European Funds Chris Bonett visited the ongoing works on the Park and Ride project in the area known as Ta’ Xħajma limits of Xewkija.
The project will consist of a total of 24,000 square meters of which 12,000 square meters will be dedicated to 300 parking spaces. The Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri said that to reduce heavy traffic and congestion in the Mġarr area, the Ministry for Gozo, through European funds under the SMITHS project, is building a multi-modal hub in – the area known as Ta Xħajma limits of Xewkija.
He explained that the aim of the project is to regenerate the area and transform it into a parking space for 300 vehicles and dedicated spaces for charging electric vehicles and pedelecs. This center will also include a terminal building for electric buses.
The Parliamentary Secretary for European Funds Chris Bonett said that a project like this fits into the government’s goals, that is to continue investing in projects in favor of carbon neutrality and green projects. “With the new operational programs, we have committed to continue increasing similar investments to beautify our country and improve the quality of life of Maltese and Gozitan citizens,” said Dr Bonett.
Through this project, an existing road will be repaired and tarmac will be provided, there will be pedestrian access and there will be protection for the rainwater that will be collected in a reservoir. In this project, one floor will be built and a green roof will be introduced over the parking area to provide an outdoor recreation facility.
The Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri concluded by saying that through this project the site will be utilized for the use it was originally intended for.
