The Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri and the Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government Alison Zerafa Civelli together with the Mayor of the Xagħra Local Council Christian Joseph Zammit inaugurated a beautification project in the playing field in the Gozitan locality of Xagħra, which is located in Vijal it-Amienja di Septembro.
With funding from the Local Government Division through the scheme ‘Financing for the Development and Improvement of Playing Fields Conditions in Localities in Malta and Gozo’, the Xagħra Local Council project was carried out with an investment of €40,000. The total fund for this scheme amounted to approximately €668,000 and a total of 27 local councils around Malta and Gozo benefited from this scheme.
“This means that 27 localities and the respective residents of these localities will benefit from improvements in existing playing fields or from the development of new playing fields,” explained Parliamentary Secretary Alison Zerafa Civelli.
Minister Clint Camilleri said that this government is committed to continue adding more open spaces for our families including through beautification projects of recreational spaces like this one that was inaugurated in Xaghra. He stated that, “It is gratifying that the Division for Local Government is also investing in the Gozitan island so that the councils continue to improve their villages that are enjoyed both by Gozitans and by all those who visit us.”
He concluded by saying that he looks forward to more joint work and such initiatives in Gozo. This project included the replacement of the swing play equipment together with new safety flooring to comply with the health and safety standards of those who use it. By the end of this month, a number of new bins will also be installed so that this swing is equipped in the best possible way.
Parliamentary Secretary Zerafa Civelli concluded by saying, “As I announced last year, the Local Government committed that during this year it will continue to finance schemes in favor of more open spaces and a better environment in the Maltese and Gozitan localities, because the – quality of life is at the core of this government’s work”.
The Mayor of Xagħra Christian Zammit claimed that through funds given by the Government they could continue to beautify the locality of Xagħra, Gozo. He explained that new play equipment and underlying carpets were installed in the playing field, new light poles were installed in the locality, and that the Xaghra Civic Center is in an evaluation stage.
