EVA KAILI VICE PRESIDENTE PARLAMENTO EUROPEO

The European Parliament decided on Tuesday to terminate the term of office of Vice-President Eva Kaili.

Greek MEP Eva Kaili has denied involvement in an alleged bribery scandal involving World Cup host Qatar at the European Parliament. She is one of four suspects charged, after Belgian investigators found €1.5m (£1.3m) in two homes and a suitcase.

The decision that Eva Kaili (NA, EL) will no longer serve as one of Parliament’s Vice-Presidents was approved by 625 votes in favour, 1 against and 2 abstentions, representing a double majority of two-thirds of the votes cast and a majority of Members composing the Parliament.

The vote was taken according to article 21 of Parliament’s rules of procedure, and it follows the ongoing investigations in Belgium involving some members and staff of the European Parliament.

The procedure has been triggered by a decision of the Conference of Presidents (EP President and political groups’ leaders) earlier this morning, which approved the action unanimously.
