“We will continue to work with the new Italian Government for a stronger relationship” – Minister Ian Borg

“This meeting, which is being held after only a few weeks from the appointment of a new Italian Government, shows the willingness of both sides to continue working together with the aim of improving the relationship for the good of both peoples.” Minister for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade Ian Borg claimed this after an official meeting he had with the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Italy Antonio Tajani.

Minister Ian Borg said that at the top of the agenda was the subject of irregular immigration in the Mediterranean Sea. In terms of this matter, both parties pointed out the need for a united voice in the European Union fora.

During the meeting, the situation in the Mediterranean was also discussed in light of the meeting that will be held later this week in Spain and also the situation in the North of the African Region, particularly in Libya. On Libya there was agreement on the importance of having a strong collaboration between the two countries so that the situation in Libya once again reaches the top of the agenda.

Above all, the bilateral relationship between the two countries was also discussed. Minister Borg recalled how Italy was one of the first countries to establish its relations with Malta after Independence and the need to continue strengthening these relations, primarily the commercial ones in order to create more business between the two countries.
