Government committed to supporting the sports sector

The Pembroke Tennis Center project is progressing well. This investment is intended to raise the level of these facilities to an international level.

This project is another investment in a state-of-the-art facility that shows how supportive the government is to the people in the communities to make a difference in their lives, as reflected in the budget for the year incoming, in which an investment of €18.7 million was announced for the sports sector.

The Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation Clifton Grima visited the facilities to see the progress in the work and said, “So that as a country we continue to achieve success in various sectors , there is a need to continue supporting the growth and investment that has already been made in Maltese athletes. This is an investment that is also being made in various sports facilities around our country”.

The facility will be for all athletes to be able to train in a better way and it can also be used to increase sports tourism. This is part of the government’s vision, because our country has everything needed to host international sporting events.

Dr. David Farrugia Sacco, the President of the Malta Tennis Federation who accompanied Minister Grima on this visit, said that the federation has been working for many years to have a facility of the highest level and praised the support that the government always gave to the federation, which led to this great project and which is the second largest facility for playing tennis in Malta.

He said that this sporting discipline is growing and therefore this specialized center will greatly help those of a young age to now be able to train and continue to raise the level of this sport. “We have worked thousands of hours to have a center to develop this sport in our country, and without the assistance of SportMalta this project would not have been possible”, said Dr Farrugia Sacco.

The investment in the Tennis Center in Pembroke is an investment that the government is giving as assistance to the Malta Tennis Federation which is managing this project with the help of SportMalta, under the Facility Upgrade Scheme.

The chairman of SportMalta said that this is another project through which SportMalta is helping to raise the level of the sector and also for the sports facilities to be of the highest level. In this way, both athletes, sportsmen and enthusiasts will not only be able to practice their sport, but follow it in an appropriate environment.

Mark Cutajar, Executive Chairman, gave the details of the project which is spread over two phases, and which envisages the construction of six tennis courts which include excavation work, electricity, asphalting of the land, fencing with the around and parking for cars. The main court will also have stands for spectators and even changing rooms and a store.
