The Birgufest event, organized by the Birgu Local Council, will take place between October 7 and 9. This is through a program that includes various cultural and artistic activities with the participation of local groups, as well as foreign ones. The main objective of the activity and its promotion is to attract people around the Maltese islands and tourists to enjoy the culture and history offered by the historic and maritime town of Birgu.

“Thanks to the scheme for this year’s Annual Cultural Activities, the Birgu Local Council has been funded around €30,000 for this festival that celebrates local culture and traditions,” said the -Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government Alison Zerafa Civelli. She explained that apart from the fact that such activities are important in order to keep Maltese culture alive, cultural activities are also important for the positive economic impact it leaves in local shops, businesses and voluntary associations.

The ‘Birgu  w,hich has become very synonymous with Maltese people as well as tourists, will take place on Saturday, October 8. For this activity the lights on the streets of Birgu are all turned off and instead, the streets are lit with thousands of candles that create a wonderful atmosphere. For this edition, the Local Council collaborated with a private company that supplied the Local Council with a substantial number of glass jars in order to reduce the use of plastic bottles in which the candle is placed.

The Mayor of Birgu John Boxall said that this year over 20,000 candles will be used, thanks to the commitment and dedication of the residents of Birgu. He explained that the festival will be spread over the whole locality and that in every corner there will be activities that meet everyone’s tastes.

It is estimated that more than 60,000 people are expected to attend this year’s Birgufest event.
