The President of the European Economic and Social Committee Christa Shweng together with her Head of Cabinet Markus Stock are in our country for a conference organized by the Maltese Council for Economic and Social Development on the importance of having coherence between the local and European social dialogue.
During the conference, which was attended by the Parliamentary Secretary for Social Dialogue Andy Ellul together with the social partners and representatives of the Civil Society Committee, Christa Shweng pointed out that the social dialogue in Malta is strong a lot.
She also praised the Maltese delegation within the European Economic and Social Committee and noted that the Maltese delegation is among the most active. The President of the European Economic and Social Committee spoke about the impacts of the war in Ukraine including on the field of energy and inflation. Here she stressed the need for Europe to look at alternative sources of energy while always ensuring more affordable energy.
Parliamentary Secretary Andy Ellul said that social dialogue is crucial especially in challenging times. Here he also referred to the way the MCESD worked during a pandemic where employers and workers’ representatives pulled together with the Government to save thousands of jobs. He stressed that the principles that were embraced during a pandemic also apply in this current time, in the face of a challenge in the field of energy. The Parliamentary Secretary said that in order to address the challenges we have in front of us it is important to respect sustainable development and keep in mind social justice especially for the most vulnerable.
