21 local councils benefit from the scheme for Annual Cultural Activities 2022

21 local councils benefited from funding from the scheme for Annual Cultural Activities 2022.

Between them they were given a quarter of a million euros in funds from the Local Government Division within the Parliamentary Secretariat for Local Government. In the application evaluation committee there were also representatives of the Tourism Authority. The main objective of this scheme is to help local councils to organize cultural activities around Malta and Gozo.

The objectives behind these cultural activities include increasing the promotion of culture and the unique cultural heritage of the localities, increasing the local touristic element, strengthening innovation and creativity and sustaining the quality and the sustainability of local cultural activities. This is apart from strengthening the socio-economic impact in the Maltese and Gozitan localities for the benefit of the residents.

“Educational, social or cultural activities on a local level, create a sense of community and give life to our localities, especially after a two-year absence of cultural and social activities due to the pandemic”, emphasized the Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government Alison Zerafa Civelli during a news conference. She also encouraged more local councils to apply for such schemes, in order to promote the cultural heritage of their localities and also to increase local tourism within their respective localities.

Director General of the Division for Local Government, Natalino Attard, said how this financing scheme for cultural activities is one of the success stories because the cultural activities organized by the Local Councils they are helping to keep cultural traditions alive that could have been forgotten over time.

The Local Councils that submitted the application and obtained the funds are: San Ġwann, Santa Venera, Xgħajra, Ħamrun, Birkirkara, Għargħur, Iklin, San Điljan, Sliema, Swieqi, Ta Xbiex, Birgu, Isla, Bormla, Fgura, Kirkop, Għajnsielem, Għarb, Munxar, Nadur and Qala.
