Gozo joins the International Island Games Association (IIGA)

The island of Gozo has been accepted to formally join the International Island Games Association (IIGA).

This happened after the Ministry for Gozo, back in April of this year, had submitted an application to become a member of this association.

The submitted application was accepted unanimously at the Annual General Meeting of the same association being held in Guernsey, at the same venue where the NatWest International Island Games will be held next year.

The Minister for Gozo, Clint Camilleri, expressed his satisfaction that the application was accepted unanimously.

“Through these international games, Gozitan athletes will have another platform where they can show their abilities and do honor both for themselves and for our Gozo,” said Minister Camilleri.

Minister Camilleri said that the preparations for Gozo to join this international association have been going on for a long time and recalled how during the visit that the members of the IIAG executive made to Gozo, they praised the commitment, the determination and the government’s vision to boost the sports sector on the island of Gozo with capital projects and direct fiscal incentives.

Minister Camilleri praised and thanked the Gozo Sports Board, which was instrumental in its successful application and in making Gozo part of this association today.

During their visit to Guernsey, the Gozitan contingent visited various sports facilities that are being prepared for next year’s games.

The International Island Games were first organized in 1985.

The members of this association now have 24 islands from all over the world and the games are organized every two years.
