Bill to over-ride Brexit deal passes first hurdle in Parliament

The British Government plans to override parts of the Brexit deal relating to Northern Ireland have passed their first hurdle in Parliament.

Conservative MP’s backed the Bill which would allow ministers to change part of the 2019 Brexit deal that saw border checks being carried on goods sent from Great Britain to Northern Ireland.

Labour voted against the Bill while former prime minister Theresa May said it was “not legal”.

The Bill still has many stages to pass before it becomes law, which could take many months.

When Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced plans to introduce the changes, the EU responded by saying it would begin legal proceedings against the UK.
